William Peace University Students Package Food for Hunger Organizations

Media Invited to Packaging Food Event

Raleigh, NC (08/10/2022) — University students are helping fight hunger in a special food packaging event on Aug. 13.

First-year students at William Peace University (WPU) will examine the issue of food insecurity and hunger as part of their First Year Seminar Class. All freshmen at WPU take the class, which combines college preparation and introduction to WPU through service learning.

Activities each year vary, but this year students will package meals for Rise Against Hunger, a growing global movement to end hunger by empowering communities, nourishing lives, and responding to emergencies.

Dawn Dillon, WPU's director of First Year Experience, said they hope to package 14,000 meals that day.

"Packaging meals is a good example of our focus on immersive learning," Dillon said. "This year, I'm thrilled to partner with some incredible organizations that allow our students to learn, act and reflect on a societal challenge such as food insecurity and hunger."

The course will continue its fight against hunger theme on Sept. 6, when Maggie Kane, executive director of A Place At The Table, will speak to the First-Year Seminar classes.

Students will also complete a research assignment about food insecurity followed by a one-time service experience with the Food Bank of Eastern and Central NC, Raleigh City Farm, or other local agencies battling food insecurity. Dillon said that their final reflection paper for the class will reflect on the entire experience and what they have learned.
